Letters from Karyn Woodland to Telus and Knights of Columbus ----------------------------------------------------------- Mr. Darren Hird TELUS Dear Mr. Hird, Like many others in our small community, I was very upset to hear that TELUS is planning to locate a cell tower in the heart of our village — and that we, the citizens of Metchosin, have 2 days remaining in which to voice our concerns! This is a travesty of justice, and an assault on democracy. Our Mayor and Council, and numerous dedicated citizens of the community of Metchosin have put years of thought and consultation into the development of our Official Community Plan. It does not include a cell tower. Not only is a tower near the Village Centre unsightly, it poses potential health risks for those of us who live here. The 'precautionary principle' calls for erring on the side of caution when research is inconclusive. The article in the Goldstream Gazette stated that TELUS had received over a dozen complaints of poor cell service in Metchosin. My family have been customers of TELUS for many years. We have lived in Metchosin 16 years, and we LIKE the fact that cell service is poor here. You are apt to loose more customers than you will gain by this action. I sincerely hope you will reconsider. Dr. Kem Luther, Metchosin Resident --------------------------------------------------------------------- Mr. Hank Francis Grand Knight Knights of Columbus Dear Mr. Francis, Like many others of our small community, I was very distressed to hear that your organization is planning to allow TELUS to erect a cellular tower on your property on Rocky Point Road. I sincerely hope you will reconsider. The siting of a cell tower in the heart of our community will irrevocably change the face of our beloved RURAL METCHOSIN. Many of us who live here (my family has lived here 16 years), came here deliberately to enjoy a healthy, wholesome, country lifestyle, close to nature. We chose this place to raise our children because it was away from the city, the traffic, and industry. Years ago, when I heard that the Knights of Columbus had purchased 7 acres on Rocky Point Road and were going to grow food for the Food Bank, I was delighted, as this initiative seemed so in keeping with the community lifestyle we celebrate here. This new 'intiative,' — i.e. a cell tower — is, in contrast, an ugly, and potentially harmful, blight on the landscape. I understand you will receive an annual fee for 'renting' the land to TELUS. My mother, a dedicated Catholic, gave over fifty years of volunteer service to the Catholic Church. But then, money isn't everything, is it? We all hope you will put family, community, and health concerns first. What would Jesus do? Sincerely, Karyn Woodland 250-474-4105 (4264 Metchosin Road, METCHOSIN, V9C 3Z5) Mr. Ken Rehman, Chair of Juan de Fuca Columbus Club Mr. Roland Wauthy, District Grand Knight, Knights of Columbus Dr. Kem Luther, Metchosin Resident Metchosin Mayor and Council
